Car Accident Lawyer in Surprise, Arizona: Help After a Car Crash

A car accident lawyer in Surprise can explain who may be at fault, deal with the adjuster, and tell you which deadlines apply before they run out. Most Arizona injury claims must be filed within two years (A.R.S. 12-542), and a crash that involves a city, county or state vehicle or road can carry a much shorter notice period. Valley Accident Law is in Scottsdale, 37.7 miles from Surprise City Hall, and we start by phone so you do not have to drive anywhere while you recover.

A Car Accident Lawyer in Surprise Starts With Where You Were Hit

Surprise covers 110.5 square miles, and the roads that carry its traffic do not behave alike. Loop 303 moves commuters past the Peoria Avenue, Cactus Road, Waddell Road, Greenway Road and Bell Road exits before it reaches the Grand Avenue (US 60) interchange, where the freeway passes over a BNSF rail line. Bell Road and Greenway Road carry shoppers and school traffic. Inside the original townsite, bounded by Greenway Road, El Mirage Road, Bell Road and Dysart Road, older streets meet newer arterials that have been widened over the last decade.

Where your crash happened decides who writes the report, which records exist, and sometimes who is responsible for the road itself. So the first questions we ask are plain ones: which street, which direction, and who came to the scene. If you are searching for a car crash lawyer in Surprise, AZ, that is the conversation you can expect from us. People in Surprise often ask whether an auto accident attorney is worth calling when the injuries seem minor. A car accident injury lawyer in Surprise can at least explain the deadlines before you decide. Insurance companies and attorneys often negotiate the percentage of fault, and the details of the location are part of that negotiation.

This page stays with car crashes. Our page for a personal injury lawyer in Surprise covers every other kind of injury case from the city.

Surprise Roads, Report Offices and Hospitals That Matter After a Crash

These are the named places that usually come up when we build a car crash claim from Surprise.

  • Loop 303 interchanges

Peoria Avenue, Cactus Road, Waddell Road, Greenway Road, Bell Road and the US 60 Grand Avenue interchange. If Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers investigated a crash on a state highway, the report comes from DPS, not from the city.

  • Grand Avenue (US 60) at 163rd Avenue

ADOT finished extra turn lanes here on February 27, 2026, including a third left-turn lane on the southbound Loop 303 off-ramp to Grand Avenue. Larger rebuilds of the interchange are programmed for later years, so the layout keeps changing.

  • Bell Road and Litchfield Road

The city reported backups in the Bell Road left-turn bays and, from January 2026, gave those left turns two protected green arrows per cycle during peak hours.

  • Surprise Police Department, 14250 W Statler Plaza

Public Safety Building. The department's website has a Vehicle Accident Reports page under Records, Forms and Reports.

  • Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, 14502 W Meeker Blvd, Sun City West

An acute care hospital with emergency services and a Level III trauma center, 3.4 miles from City Hall, about 9 minutes with no traffic.

  • Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, Glendale

A Level I adult trauma center, 13.3 miles from City Hall, about 27 minutes with no traffic. Other Level I centers on the state list include Abrazo West in Goodyear and HonorHealth Deer Valley.

What Is Changing on Surprise Streets, and Why It Matters to Fault

Traffic control in Surprise has been changing quickly. Each change can matter to who had the right of way, so we ask what the signal or lane layout was on the day of your crash.

Flashing yellow arrows

In January 2026 the city launched a campaign reminding drivers to yield when a yellow arrow flashes, with new signs at 10 intersections and messages on digital boards along the Bell Road corridor. A left-turn crash at one of those intersections often turns on whether the turning driver yielded.

The 163rd Avenue widening

The final phase began June 1, 2026 and is expected to last nearly 15 months, widening 163rd Avenue from Happy Valley Road to Jomax Road to three lanes in each direction. The city cut the posted speed to 35 mph and warned that trucks would be entering and exiting the lane closure.

Six new traffic signals

Signals were scheduled for July and August 2026 at Waddell Road and 157th Avenue, Waddell Road and Legacy Parc Boulevard, 163rd Avenue and Country Club Drive, Peoria Avenue and Cotton Lane, and Greenway Road at both 175th Avenue and Verde Vista Drive. The city said traffic volumes were the reason it skipped the usual 48-hour flashing red phase.

Wider Cactus Road

Cactus Road was widened to three lanes each way at Perryville Road in early 2025, next to the aquatic center and Fire Station 309. More lanes mean longer crossings and more lane-change conflicts.

What to Do After a Car Crash in Surprise

You do not need a perfect file to call us. These steps protect the claim.

  1. 1

Report the crash and the injury

A driver in a crash that causes injury or death must give notice immediately, by the quickest means, to local police, the county sheriff or the highway patrol (A.R.S. 28-666). In Surprise that usually means calling 911.

  2. 2

    Ask for the report number

Ask the responding officer which agency wrote the report and how to look it up. If you believe you were not at fault, make sure you explain this to the officer.

  3. 3

    Photograph the scene

If safely possible, before any vehicle is moved, photograph the vehicles, the lane markings, the traffic signal and any construction signs. On roads like 163rd Avenue, a work-zone sign can matter as much as the cars.

  4. 4

Get checked, even with no or seemingly minor symptoms

A doctor decides what care you need. Pain can show up days later, and a record from the first visit forward is what links an injury to a crash.

  5. 5

Be careful with the other insurer

You are not required to agree to a recorded statement with the other driver's insurer. A casual comment about feeling fine can injure your legal rights later, so talk with us first.

Getting the Crash Report: Surprise Police or Arizona DPS

Two agencies write most reports for Surprise crashes, and each has its own request path.

Crash on a Surprise city street

  • Surprise Police write the report, and the department is headquartered at the Public Safety Building, 14250 W Statler Plaza.
  • The police website lists a Vehicle Accident Reports page, along with Records Requests and Statistics and Maps pages.
  • The City Clerk's Public Records Requests page has separate tabs for City Court, Fire-Medical and Police.

Crash DPS troopers investigated on a state highway

  • DPS keeps records for collisions its troopers investigated on an Interstate or State Highway. For crashes on town, city or county roads you contact the local agency instead.
  • DPS lists $9.00 for a report by email (up to 5 MB), $9.00 for the first nine pages by mail plus $0.10 per added page, and $10.00 on a CD.
  • Requests go through the DPS Public Services Portal, and the records unit is at 2222 W Encanto Blvd, Phoenix. Our police report guide walks through the steps.

If a City, County or State Vehicle or Road Was Involved

A notice of claim against a public entity generally must be filed within 180 days after the claim accrues, with the facts and a specific sum certain, and it is deemed denied after 60 days without a response (A.R.S. 12-821.01). A lawsuit generally must follow within one year after accrual (A.R.S. 12-821). The city has not published a page that names the office accepting a notice of claim, so we confirm who is authorized to accept it before anything is filed. These rules have exceptions, so call us and we will explain how they apply to you. Our notice of claim guide has more.

Insurance, Fault and the Court That Would Hear a Surprise Car Accident Case

Arizona requires liability coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 for property damage (A.R.S. 28-4009), which is often not enough for a serious crash. Arizona follows pure comparative fault with no percentage bar, so being partly to blame does not end a claim (A.R.S. 12-2505). Rear-end crashes on Loop 303 raise the following-too-closely rule (A.R.S. 28-730), and a driver who was looking at a phone raises the handheld ban (A.R.S. 28-914). Our statewide Arizona car accident lawyer guide covers each of these in full, and our insurance minimums guide explains the numbers.

A lawsuit is a different story from the first claim. The Maricopa County Superior Court location list shows the Surprise regional center at 14264 W Tierra Buena Lane for family cases only and puts civil cases at the East Court Building, 101 W Jefferson Street in Phoenix. Justice courts hear civil cases up to $10,000, and four justice precincts are housed at the Tierra Buena Lane address in Surprise. Surprise City Court, on the Recreation Campus next to City Hall, handles municipal matters such as traffic citations. Our Maricopa County courts guide explains how to tell them apart.

If your crash was just across a city line, the same steps apply, and we have pages for a Glendale car accident lawyer and a Peoria car accident lawyer as well.

Questions

Questions about Surprise car accident cases

Which police department writes the report for a crash in Surprise?

For a crash on a Surprise city street, the Surprise Police Department writes the report and keeps a Vehicle Accident Reports page on its website. If Arizona DPS troopers investigated a crash on a state highway, DPS holds that report instead. Ask the officer at the scene which agency will write it.

Where would a lawsuit over a Surprise crash be filed?

The Maricopa County Superior Court location list shows civil cases at the East Court Building in downtown Phoenix, not at the Surprise regional center, which is listed for family cases. Smaller claims of $10,000 or less can go to a justice court. We will explain which court fits your case.

Where would I be treated after a serious crash in Surprise?

The closest hospital with emergency services on the state trauma list is Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, a Level III trauma center about 9 minutes from City Hall with no traffic. Level I adult trauma centers are farther away, such as Banner Thunderbird in Glendale. Paramedics decide where to take you based on your condition.

What if a city vehicle hit me?

Claims against a public entity have a 180-day notice requirement and a one-year lawsuit deadline, much shorter than the usual two years. Call us quickly and we will explain how the rules apply to you.

I was partly at fault. Can I still recover?

Arizona follows pure comparative fault with no percentage bar, so you may still recover, reduced by your share of fault (A.R.S. 12-2505). Insurance companies and attorneys often negotiate the percentage of fault, which is one reason to call early.

How much does it cost to talk with a car accident attorney in Surprise?

You pay no attorney fee unless we recover money for you. Request a free case review and we will explain how costs are handled.
